Take a look at the flagship vehicle from the Mercedes EQ lineup – the EQS SUV. Building upon the EQS sedan, this larger and more commanding version aims to capture the luxurious essence of the classic Sonderklasse in an SUV powered by batteries. However, as we dive into a special review, it becomes clear that size doesn’t always equate to greatness.

Interior – Spacious

The EQS SUV doesn’t compromise on luxury within its interior. With a 108.4kWh battery both, the 450 and 580 variants offer motor setups for all-wheel drive allowing for ranges of up to 364 miles for the 450 model and 363 miles for the 580 model. You also have options like AMG Line Premium Plus or Business Class, both providing a combination of cutting-edge technology and comfort that ensures every journey is an indulgent experience.

Size and Space

Staying true to its SUV classification, the EQS SUV offers generous space inside. The second row mirrors the opulence of the seats, creating a sense of expansiveness throughout the cabin. Despite its dimensions, navigating the UK roads can be challenging due to its width, with passengers perceiving a substantial presence even when seated in the back.

The MBUX infotainment system although it serves its purpose, appears to become more complex as the car size increases. Trying to navigate a screen while maintaining stability on the road requires a balance and the user-friendliness of the system may not scale seamlessly with the car`s dimensions.

Power Underneath

When it comes to performance, the EQS SUV offers two power options, the 450 with 355bhp and the 580 with a 536bhp. However, due to its weight (2.8 tonnes), the SUV’s dynamic capabilities are somewhat hindered. The steering feels unusually light, which can make it feel unpredictable at high speeds, and while rear-wheel steering is beneficial for parking, it adds to the twitchiness of the steering which eventually diminishes the driving experience.

Any Flaws?

The brakes of the EQS SUV have some quirks that may undermine driver confidence during braking. There are also concerns about the air suspension of the EQS SUV that arise despite its smoothness at high speeds. When driving on roads or encountering bumps, the SUV tends to pitch and sway which disrupts its expected stability. Balancing the desire for a ride with control remains a challenge that the EQS SUV falls slightly short of overcoming.

Value Dilemma

The EQS SUV’s hefty price tag raises expectations for its performance and overall package. While it tries to justify its costs with a range of trims and a tech-filled interior, the less-than-impressive dynamics and underwhelming driving experience make us question its value proposition.

Final Thoughts – A Premium Offering That Falls Short

Mercedes aimed to create a flagship with the EQS SUV but it didn`t quite meet expectations. Despite a range of high-end features and plenty of high-tech luxuries, there are notable drawbacks that diminish its premium appeal.

When it comes to developing a top-tier SUV like the Mercedes EQS SUV, it seems they may have fallen short in delivering a gratifying driving experience. As the world of vehicles progresses, the standards for luxury, performance, and value are constantly being redefined. This pushes manufacturers to approach their designs with precision and innovation.

But apart from the size, style, or design, everyone has his own choice. Let’s take a glimpse of the most wanted cars over the years.

Bugatti Chiron

Bugatti Chiron, without any dubious thought, is known to be the world’s fastest car. The main feature for its fame is its massive engine with 16-cylinder responsible for pushing Bugatti to 300 mph and beyond. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mercedes is sustaining its name and fame game, that’s one of the reasons it’s well known over the centuries. The inner look took transformation more seriously than does the outlook. Instrument panels comprise the two large screens, and cabins are mostly hidden with leather and wood frills, high-quality alloy wheels maintaining its royal look along with its keyless locking system.

Porsche 911

Another all-time favorite car, the Jaguar E-type, is still on the top of the list of the classic car. Back in time, the most popular and running car among the British. Till the mid-70s, production of E-type remained at its highest. The interior had gone too many changes, but the outside look has been constant for centuries; this is one reason for its demand and popularity. Not just this, the E-type is also entitled “the most beautiful car ever made” by Enzo Ferrari.

1. Toyota Avalon 2010-2012

Toyota Avalon is a reasonably large-sized sedan and offers optimum power with a roomy and premium interior. It has great safety scores and is known to be a very reliable vehicle. 8. Hyundai Genesis 2009-2012

Hyundai Genesis also falls in the group of the few cars that give the experience of luxury mid-size sedan in this price category. It is the Hyundai’s flagship in this sedan type thus it provides a smooth and comfortable ride. Either a V6 or a V8 engine is supplied with it and both give an excellent power to the car’s weight. Moreover, Genesis has a high-degree of reliability and a good safety rating owing to its well-crafted design.

In 2020, comparison site Uswitch investigated which cars would be best for taxi drivers. The 2019 Nissan Leaf took the number one spot, offering 108 MPG equivalent (MPGe), at a cost of a mere £0.04 per mile. What’s more, the car requires zero tax on behalf of being a fully electric vehicle (EV) and was said to have a highly comfortable interior too – important for obtaining that five-star rating.

With fossil-fuelled cars set to be banned by 2030, we’re certain that EVs like the Leaf will continue to spread in popularity amongst the taxi driver community, especially as EV prices continue to drop.

Kia Soul

Next on Uswitch’s rankings was the 2019 Kia Soul. Another EV, the Soul had the same MPGe and cost per mile of the Leaf, only slightly missing out due to its smaller boot and legroom. Nevertheless, the Soul is a nicely affordable EV that is sure to protect cab drivers that use it from having to pay to enter the clean air and low emission zones that are cropping up across the UK.

Ford Focus Estate

The only diesel in the top five was the Ford Focus Estate 2019. It is more expensive to run than the two electrics higher up the rankings and requires vehicle tax at £365 per year. Yet, its 80 MPG engine that runs at £0.05 per mile means that the estate is cheap to run, as well as boasting plenty of comfort and luggage space – great for airport taxi routes.

Skoda Octavia

Fourth in Uswitch’s rankings was the 2019 Skoda Octavia. A petrol vehicle, the Octavia nevertheless fared well in terms of efficiency but truly excelled with it came to comfort rating and luggage space. Award-winning, Skodas are a very popular taxi choice due to their no-nonsense practicality, low running costs, and ever-improving cabin quality – the perfect combination for a working vehicle.

Mercedes E-Class

While it may not be the greenest vehicle on this list, the Mercedes E-Class caters well to taxi drivers who serve customers looking for a more premium experience. In this role, it excels, coming top of Uswitch’s ranking for comfort with a perfect score, and displaying fantastic lines that set it apart from other cars on the road.

That’s not only good for passengers, of course, but drivers too. If you’re ferrying passengers across town for 12-hour stretches at a time, you may as well do so in as comfortable a means as possible.

Meet the Mercedes-AMG A45 S.

The German firm makes an S and a standard 382bhp version of the car, but we’re only getting the full-fat S in the UK which costs a rather scary 65.500 USD.

That’s plenty enough to pay for an A-Class hatchback, however much ­performance it has.

The test car, however, is an A45 S Plus which adds adaptive dampers, an ­aerodynamic package, a Burmester sound system, and a few other bits and bobs.

That puts this Mercedes up against some very substantial opposition that includes BMW’s stunning M2 Competition, but you’re certainly not going to be disappointed by the car’s performance as it’ll leave your eyes as wide open as the price.

Not surprisingly, but to the disappointment of your local tire shop, the A45 S is four-wheel drive via Mercedes’ eight-speed double-clutch transmission which, thanks to a new rear differential that incorporates two multi-disc clutches, can send as much as 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels.

Yours for 74.000 USD.

The various driving modes available include an Individual setting that allows you to tailor your own selection of steering, throttle response, and other factors.

A Drift mode is also available which is utterly pointless for the public road. Launch control is standard and that’s another one for the race track only, please.

This is a very fast car and if you think about it simply in performance terms the A45 S is good value for the money.

It has a top speed of 168mph and using the aforementioned launch control it will do 0-62mph in 3.9sec which puts it on the same page with supercars and not four-door hatchbacks that will take your family shopping or on holiday.

That job the A45 S will do, but if those journeys involve rough road surfaces then your family or friends will not thank you.

The ride comfort isn’t that bad considering the big wheels, brakes, and sports-orientated suspension set-up, especially in the Comfort setting.

The grip is no issue, even on damp roads. The steering should have loads of feel and the way the car catapults itself out of corners as the four-wheel-drive system and traction control manipulate the torque must be astounding.

The A-Class in its cheapest form is A class act, yet Mercedes has thrown even more at the car’s already impressive interior for this big-buck and big-bang version.

Heated sports seats are standard while our Plus-spec car adds leather and also brushed aluminum that looks excellent alongside the gloss black plastic on the rest of the dashboard.

It’ll eat rivals like the Honda Civic Type R and Renault Megane RS Trophy for breakfast.

Prices

As aforementioned, price for the model are really competitive. Deliveries will start at the end of the month, with three versions to be available on the market. Prices are listed below and do not include the destination fees.

All three variants – the GLB 200, GLB 250 and the top of the line AMG GLB 35 come with top features inside the cabin and plenty of new technology. The models also sit on the company`s latest MFA2 platform, also underpining the B-Class, along with the A-, CLA- and GLA-class. Still, compared with its cousin, the B-Class, the 2020 GLB is 100 mm longer, and that to make room for the third seat row.

Interior Space and Technology

Even if the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB comes with three row of seats, it still makes this SUV extremely comfortable in terms of space. As the company states, the third row provides ”a comfortable position” for those who are up to 168cm tall, featuring the same safety equipment as the other rows. This means side window airbags, retractable headrests, or ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

Technology wise, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB is equipped with the latest gadgetries. There is the 10.25-inch digital screens for the instrument cluster, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, keyless start, electronic tailgate, thermotronic climate control, and much more.

Performance

There are three engines equipping the GLB, depending on the version you choose. For instance, the base model 200 comes with a 1.3-liter turbo-petrol flat-four pot, developing no less than 120kW and 250 Nm of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is done în 9.1 seconds.

The mid-leven version is equipped with a higher 2.0-liter turbo engine, with 165kW and 350 Nm of torque. The same sprint is visibly-improved – 6.9 seconds.

Finally, the topper AMG GLB 35 packs an updated 2.0-liter turbo flat-four, with an impressive 225kW and 400 Nm of torque. It features an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling a sprint în just 5.2 seconds.

As soon as you take a look at the updated Mercedes S class, the new front grill and headlights grab your attention. The new headlights are made a bit sleeker and the front grill gets widened with additional curves.

The bonnet also gets pronounced curves and the whole front end gives the car a rather aggressive and sportier look.

The side profile on the new Mercedes S class gets a bit curvy, with a pronounced curve on the lower side. The side profile on the previous S class looks a bit more aggressive as compared to the newer model.

The rear end gets a complete revamp, and the new dense LED taillights also get slimmer with a triangular patterned glow. A chrome lining sweeps in between the two taillights.

The rear bumper looks a bit chunkier and gets dual exhaust pipes below. The bumper carries the same side curve all along the back of the car.

The new Mercedes S class (2021) will be having a large centered touch screen to control all the features. But the chrome buttons on the previous model, added to the premium look of S class, whereas this implementation gives it a techy, but flatter look on the inside. The center console feels a lot boring and empty with this new implementation.

The Display meter is also a separate rectangular screen that protrudes almost vertically behind the steering. This model also gets sleeker looking rectangular horizontally oriented air vents as compared to the circular ones rounded with chrome which gave it a premium feel.

It is expected to come packed with advanced autonomous features. These features will make the Mercedes S class a bit easier to maneuver in the city due to its large size. It is also expected to come with rear wheel steering to accommodate its large wheelbase.

Although it is confirmed that the new S class will also be available with a v12 engine, but it is expected in the Maybach version. The standard Mercedes S class will be available in a v8 or an Inline 06 coupled with a mild hybrid system. It will be capable of being driven on electric power alone for 62 miles. It is also expected to come in a pure electric variant in the future.

It is expected to rollout later this year with the same price tag i.e. S class starts from around 94,250$ whereas the Maybach variant start from 173,000$.

The tuning segment has also brought some fresh products, and one of them comes from renowned German tuner firm Mansory. Mansory is famous for its projects on BMW models, especially on the X5 or the X6. Besides BMW, the firm also deals with other German carmakers like Mercedes-Benz.

So, here we are with the brand-new 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 taking its aftermarket share of goodies at the exterior as well as under the hood. And I have to tell you that the whole deal is worth a lot of money, which is almost $360K.

Mansory took the social-media by storm with its latest creation, the tuner adding an eye-catching carbon fiber body kit as well as an impressive power stage under the hood.

Exterior Changes

The technicians from Mansory wrapped the car`s exterior with a flamboyant kit, consisting of new front and rear bumper from carbon fiber, along with huge fender flares to fit the big wheels, and a new hood scoop. Other carbon fiber elements can be seen on the extra parts of the four fenders and front doors, or on the roof attachments. There is also the black Panamericana grille, as well as the two-tone mirror caps with red accents. The entire kit is complemented with a new set of 24-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels.  

Massive Power under the Hood

Powering the stock 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 is a massive 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 585 PS and 430kW, which enables a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, which is mind-blowing…that at a top speed of just 220 km/h.

With the tuner`s new power kit, the juice has been raised to a whopping 720 PS (710 HP) and 530 kW, which makes it even faster. Unfortunately, the performance figures are not given, however, we guess around 4.2 seconds, a significant improvement from the stock.

Mechanically, this 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 has not received new aftermarket goodies. Even so, it proves to be highly-advanced with the stock suspension system which comes with a semi-independent setup at the front; the rear end features a rigid setup, all together proving better stance and grip. There is also the body-on-frame chassis that it stands on, now wider and longer and providing 55 percent more stiffness than the previous model.

As for the price, it was already mentioned – it stands at whopping $361,327, which is almost double than the MSRP of the standard model in Germany. However, those who are not satisfied with the stock features, can always resort to such drastic customizations. After all, we are dealing with a top-notch model from Mercedes-Benz, the AMG division.

Mansory isn’t the only aftermarket firm to show up with a customized and extremely expensive G63 at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. We are dealing here with Brabus, the tuning division from Daimler, which also deals with extreme customizations. The same 2020 G63 has received around 789 horsepower and a lot of new visuals; however, the price is much higher – $426,851. This project is called the 800 Adventure XLP by Brabus, and is actually an extended G63 with a bed right behind it. But we will talk about that in a future article.

This is the reason why a lot of tuning companies are on a constant hunt when it comes to customizing the model. One of them is the well-known tuning company from Florida, Renntech, which recently had the chance to grab the model and play with it. And that thanks to a customer who recently went to Germany and bought it as a gift to his wife and then brought it to the company`s location in the US. 

The exterior doesn’t show serious signs of customizations, however, it did receive new front and rear bumpers and wider alloy wheels. At the rear however, one can observe the massive double downpipes which announce impressive engine soundtrack and increased power.

Speaking of a more impressive engine revving, the standard exhaust system has received a remote-control exhaust valve module that enables “the exhaust valve to be fully opened in all driving modes.” However, the work on the exhaust system is still in progress, as the tuner would eventually install a new one with an upgraded catalytic converter.

As shown in the pictures below, the aftermarket specialists from Renntech have tested out the new power of the Mercedes-AMG A45 S. If in stock form, the hot hatchback develops no less than 416 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, squeezed from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged M139 engine, in upgraded form, this little beast is capable of more.

As the tuner declared, at least two power stages are available for this gorgeous model; at least two, for the moment.

The first stage revolves around 475 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of tor            que, thanks to an engine software update. The second stage will be available in the first quarter of the year with figures to stand at 550 horsepower, that achieved thanks to modified turbocharger and upgraded exhaust system. Still to come, there might be a third power stage, with around 600 horsepower, which is mind-blowing for the Mercedes-AMG A45 S.

With the first power stage alone, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S by Renntech is said to achieve a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a staggering 3.9 seconds. Imagine what it would do with no less than 600 horsepower on-board. Surely, we will hear more about the tuner`s impressive power program on this exquisite hot hatchback.

Even if the model is only available in Europe, the closest thing to the model that the US customers can enjoy, is the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, which features the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged M139 banger; however, it comes with less power than the A45 S on the Old Continent. Even so, both model share visual characteristics and technology on-board.
